Motoring expert and television presenter Quentin Willson has given his seal of approval to a new web app for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.
Livingston-based route optimisation specialist Route Monkey, which is part of the Trakm8 Group, has created a dedicated EV journey planner. It aims to banish the phenomenon of ‘range anxiety’ by optimising routes for electric cars, and is particularly useful on longer journeys, as in a matter of seconds it plans the complete route and recharging schedule.
Renowned EV advocate Quentin Willson was among the first to try a demo version of the MyRouteMonkey app. He used it during a round trip from Milton Keynes to Birmingham and documented his journey in a video that can be viewed here: http://www.routemonkey.com/drivers/everything-ev/myroutemonkey-ev-journey-planner
Quentin said: “Having so much charging point data in the palm of your hand is a huge step forward for EV drivers. MyRouteMonkey shows you it all on your smartphone - the exact location, cost, plug types, supplier and power level. It makes range anxiety a thing of the past.”
The driver logs in via a web portal and inputs their start point, destination, and type of EV into MyRouteMonkey. The web app then calculates the best route and provides instructions on when and where to stop to recharge the battery. The driver can even specify how much battery charge they want their vehicle to retain at the end of the journey, ensuring they don’t get caught short before the next trip.
This groundbreaking technology, which was developed with R&D funding support from Scottish Enterprise, will be made available as a free app. It aims to encourage even more drivers to make the switch to EVs.
Colin Ferguson, Managing Director of Trakm8 Group Fleet and Optimisation, said: “Thanks to the support of Scottish Enterprise, we’ll be rolling out this free web app to the public. I am delighted that Quentin Willson approves of the technology and look forward to launching it in May.”
The MyRouteMonkey app will be officially launched at the GreenFleet Evolution show at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on 5th May. Following this the app will be available to use, for free, at www.routemonkey.com.
