To help improve London’s air quality the Metropolitan Police has pledged to spend £21 million to add 250 green police cars to their fleet of 4,000 vehicles. Met Police boroughs will get 32 hybrid electric patrol cars and Royal Protection officers will get 10. Force Commander, Sir Bernard Hogan Howe, has spoken to Tesla founder Elon Musk about trials of the Tesla Model S and a pilot project in London with police liveried BMW i3 patrol cars has already proved successful. A spokesman from the Met said; ‘we want our vehicle fleet to be as green as possible.’ The London Fire Brigade has also been testing 53 BMW i3s and in America the LAPD now runs 198 electric cars – the largest in the U.S.
