The London Evening Standard reports that 65% of Londoners are unwilling or unable to pay the higher insurance premiums levied by insurers on ultra low emission cars. Some insurance companies currently charge 50% more for hybrids and EVs claiming that a shortage of trained mechanics is pushing up repair costs. Currently only 1% of technicians in the UK have been trained to repair plug-in vehicles and the Institute of the Motor Industry is calling on the government to help improve training for electric vehicle repairers. But plug-in car experts say that the higher insurance premiums are unjustified as the accident rate for EVs and hybrids are much lower than conventional cars due to owners who drive slower and more carefully to improve battery range.
